El PEN Català, associació internacional d’escriptors que, des de 1922, treballa a tot el territori lingüístic dels Països Catalans i a nivell internacional en defensa de la llibertat d’expressió, dels drets lingüístics dels pobles i de l’intercanvi entre literatures a través de la traducció,

MANIFESTA,

El seu rebuig més ferm davant l’acte de censura que ha patit l’escriptor Albert Sánchez Piñol per part de l’Ambaixada espanyola a Holanda, a través de l’Instituto Cervantes, el qual va suspendre a darrera hora l’acte de presentació de la traducció de la novel·la Victus al neerlandès, a la ciutat d’Utrech. Aquest acte estava programat per a dijous 4 de setembre, i les raons adduïdes per a la suspensió no tenen res a veure amb la qualitat de la novel·la, sinó amb motivacions d’oportunitat  i de conveniència política.

Aquest greu acte de censura no sols afecta la nostra societat, sinó també la societat neerlandesa que ha vist segrestat, de la manera més injusta i absurda, un acte de cultura per imposicions polítiques.

Creiem que el govern de l’Estat espanyol hauria d’asserenar-se i no decidir sobre la conveniència d’un acte cultural, ni atribuir-se el paper de mentor del criteri no sols dels ciutadans del seu Estat, sinó dels d’altres estats europeus, com ho és en aquest cas Holanda.

La llibertat d’expressió és el més fonamental de tots els Drets Humans, del qual es deriven tots els altres. Cal que tots els estats es constitueixin en garants d’aquest dret i que considerin els seus ciutadans amb prou criteri com per exercir-la sempre amb respecte. Accions com la que ha protagonitzat l’Estat espanyol són pròpies de governs no democràtics. Per això,

DEMANEM,

Que l’Instituto Cervantes programi al més aviat possible la presentació censurada a Utrech i que no es repeteixin accions d’aquesta mena tan barroeres com innecessàries en un estat de dret.

The Catalan PEN, the association of writers who, since 1922, works in the whole linguistic territory of the Catalan Countries and at international level for the advocacy of freedom of expression, the linguistic rights of peoples and the exchange of literature through translation

STATES,

Its disapproval to the act of censorship that the writer Albert Sánchez Piñol has suffered by the Spanish Embassy in the Netherlands, at the Instituto Cervantes, which suspended at the eleventh hour the presentation of the translation of his novel Victus into Dutch in the city of Utrecht. This event was scheduled for Thursday, the 4th of September. The reasons given for the suspension have nothing to do with the quality of the novel, but motivated by political interests and opportunism.

This serious act of censorship concerns not only the Catalan society, but also the Dutch that has been deprived of a cultural event for political reasons, in a very unfair and ridiculous manner. We believe that the Spanish government should calm down and not interfere on the convenience of a cultural event.

Freedom of expression is the most fundamental of all human rights, which derive all the others. It is necessary that all states become guarantors of this right and deem their citizens capable to exercise it with respect. Actions like the one we are condemning here, are generally perpetrated by non-democratic governments. For that reason we,

ASK,

The Instituto Cervantes to schedule as soon as possible the censored event in Utrecht and not to repeat such actions that appear as unnecessary and inappropriate in a state governed by the rule of law.
